International Business Machines (IBM) is to invest a large amount of money into developing nanotechnology concepts and researching the applications of nano machines. This was announced by Bloomberg Magazine days after the investment was officially announced by the company. The Nanotechnology research center in New York would be the institution receiving the finances to research the area and the state would also invest some 400 million dollars into the initiative. The project would be supported by Intel and Globalfoundies (Taiwan company) and the sides would be packaging some 4,4 billion dollars investment into the research of the potential use of micro machines.

IBM is currently the largest researcher of nano technologies. The chart above indicates the presence of companies in the US that constantly develop nano concepts and study the potential application of the technology. Working along with NASA on such projects, the experience of International Business Machines is undoubted and joining force with Intel means that the partnership might lead to quite successful results. The investment is not capped at only 4,4 billion dollars and the people from the fund management revealed that the parties have agreed to add up finances should there be any significant satisfactory research results that might enlighten the future use of nanotechnologies.

The investment would be mainly aimed at developing computer technologies using nano machines. This would ensure the development of super small computers and the interaction between different computer configurations and computerized systems would be easier. For example, such nanotechnology might be use for the creation of instant translators so language would not be a problem for people travelling across the world, also the technology might be used to payment cards, GPS systems etc. The aim is the creation of small and powerful enough computer processor that can maintain steady and continuous work as the standard processing devices.

Another aim (not officially announced) of the project is to put nanotechnology in use of medicine – even though still being a concept, the idea of putting nano machines into the bloodstream of a human being is an attractive opportunity to explore and develop cures against various diseases.

Special travel roaming fees always led me to believe that I was about to be ripped off by my mobile phone network. Yet recently I bought myself a new Smartphone and somehow managed to get a really good roaming deal with it.

As you know I’m a bit of a techno tycoon, but with the recent economic trials faced by everyone, I’ve become as price conscious as the next person and am always on the look out for people trying to take me for a ride. Despite regulations that were introduced two years ago by the EU, many service providers are still managing to slip in extra charges onto people’s tariffs and price plans. A blog that appeared in the Guardian’s technology section made me smile recently. Are we really that naive to believe that the drop in roaming charges will mean a drop in all other charges as the blogger assumed two years ago? Fortunately I’ve got a great deal, but it just serves to illustrate how choosey you have to be now.

To be fair broadband and mobile service providers are more aware of this then ever before and the market has become increasingly competitive – meaning light on the horizon for average Joe’s like you and me. I’m happy with my new HTC smartphone. It’s simple, easy to use and enables me to browse the internet whenever I like, making it my new best friend for work and personal use.

I’m a huge fan of the latest computers and phones available, but I do have to remind myself that I can afford to be choosey. It’s advice that everyone should take.

I opted for an Asus netbook this time because they have such a damn good reputation (and a dual core one at that!). However, I am not overly impressed with it up to now. For one thing, when it has a better processor than my last one did, surely it should run at a much faster pace???? Well, you’d think so anyway… But in actual fact, my old single core workhorse could outrun this lumbering specimen on any day of the week. And who knows if it is even capable of running dedupe Software?

The other big let-down is the operating system… Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I was perfectly happy with my Windows XP set-up. My new netbook is running on Windows 7 Starter which seems to be incredibly slow and complicated by comparison. Plus (just to rub salt in the wound) it does not even allow you to change the background on your desktop! Surely the designers at Microsoft must understand how important it is for people to personalise their new computers????

Oh, well. Perhaps it’s just early days. I’m hoping to get my head around these initial disappointments and that my new machine will grow on me. It certainly looks the part and the keyboard is wonderful to type on! Time will tell I suppose. I’ll keep you posted…

My friend and I were engaging the services of data recovery London when we the news item on Apple’s iOS being set to dominate the tablet market up to 2015. We were amazed at that prediction because the Apple iOS is relatively new to the tablet market.

Gartner, the research firm is very optimistic about the prospects of Apple iOS, in the future, in spite of the heavy competition from other operating systems. They say that Apple iOS will dominate the market with 69% market share of tablets in 2011, and a potential 47% share of tablets in the market in 2015.

Gartner says that Apple iPad has re-invented the tablet market the same way the Apple iPhone revolutionized the Smartphone sector. The media tablet give a unique experience besides being more user-friendly than the ordinary pc, and anything and everything that has to do with the environment nowadays grabs the attention of the general public. The Apple iOS although set to dominate the tablet market through 2015, will have to heavily rely on the environment.

Tablets are much more dependent on overall user experience, applications and services. The Blackberry Playbook, while by next year may be able to develop a single community of users, may not come close to Apple iOS whose success would be determined by the reliance on the ecosystem.

So Gartner sounds not very optimistic about the prospects of this RIM product, though they appreciate the migration of their devices to QNX in 2012, which has strong multitasking abilities and promises to have improved performance and graphics.

I was planning to travel to the Caribbean recently and whilst online seeking advice from my roaming advisor I was a bit frustrated by how my laptop was functioning as certain application would not operate as well as it should be. So I spoke with a techie friend of mine who asked me is it is using a 32 Bit or 64 bit processor. So I checked but wondered what’s the difference. Here’s what I learnt.

Both 32 Bit processor and 64 Bit processor have some advantages and disadvantages. But deciding which one is better depends on how you want to use your PC.

There is a binary digit difference between 32 Bit processor and 64 Bit processor but it’s a mathematical difference so let’s just avoid this difference and see how this binary digit difference affects these processors.

Just because 64 sounds larger than 32, people think that 64-bit processor is better than 32 bit processors but there is not much software available that are compatible with 64-bit processors so you don’ t get the best out of it.

The key advantages of the 64 Bit procesors are,

Silicon processes are more advanced,

There are more transistors,

Its speed is faster.

Sadly for us the consumers 64-bit processors are very expensive if you compare the price with 32-bit processors. But things will change when the software vendors start making software that is compatible with 64-bit processors.

Once you start using a 64-bit processor, you don’t have to think about buying another processor for years. But for now, 32-bit processors are less expensive and all the software is compatible with 32-bit processors.

My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding is one of Channel 4’s latest inquisitive documentaries into the lives of peculiar people. Most of what Channel 4 produces tends to be quite voyeuristic – almost parasitic – and rarely captures an in-depth but impartial view of the subjects. Channel 4 is renowned for preying on the vulnerable, the unfortunate, or the just-plain-dim.

This latest addition to the broadcaster’s portfolio is a solid success, however. It follows the lives of several “travelling” families (not that they travel) and their bizarre mating rituals. While at first glance the comparison appears snobby or discriminatory, parallels have been drawn between My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding and a David Attenborough nature documentary detailing the courtships of a strange exotic species.

The weddings are expensive and tacky. Of course this is a matter of taste, but I’m reliably informed from a great number of sources that all the gypsy weddings depicted on the show are quite objectively naff. The gypsies have no proper homes – just caravans or park homes, for which of course they have no planning permission, building regulations or park home insurance. Nevertheless, the weddings cost tens of thousands of pounds and involve all sorts of princess-themed tat. One definitely had a wedding cake in the shape of the Disney castle. This was a wonder to behold, as the craftsmanship that went into such an engineering feat must have been formidable. One of the dresses weighed fourteen stone and actually had a built-in light show, meaning the worried (orange) mother had to carry a fire extinguisher in case her daughter started smouldering.

I really need to take a break from all things technology. For the last few months, and almost every day all through Christmas I’ve found that I’ve been so immersed in technology, upgrades, and the social web that I haven’t actually taken much time to come up for air. You’d think that Christmas Day would have been a time to take a break, but it was another day with a lot of computer time like any other.
Not since last summer did I take a real break, so now just as spring seems to be getting closer I’m realizing how important it is to ensure that we take regular breaks. The breaks aren’t just important for our mental health, but also so that we can take stock of what we have, what we want from our lives, and as a reminder that technology is fun and all, but that at the end of the day, enjoying life is much more fun than the latest gadget.
So I recommend that everyone plan a holiday to go and get some sun sometime in the next few months. Don’t want until summer, when you’ve gotten too lethargic and decided to stay indoors. No, book a cheap holiday now. You don’t need to have had a record breaking year with Galvan FSA helping you invest in the stock market or anything like that in order for you to go on holiday. No, you just need to have a little money, find a nice location that is guaranteed to get some sun, and just go for it!
